Angel Gugu’s name means precious. Her deep-bronze feather dress, made from dyed ostrich feathers, cascades down in a flurry of bronze, adding a touch of earthy charm. Her wings, crafted from intertwined loops of wire, are adorned with beads that sparkle in a rich bronze hue. She features a bronze-coloured wire head adorned with a halo of shimmering bronzed beads. She is indeed a celebration of the earth and all its wonders.

The Collection
Gugu is a treasured member of the Aarde range, a collection that celebrates nature and Mother Earth. The word “Aarde” means earth in Afrikaans, reflecting the collection’s roots in the natural world. The Aarde angels, including Ronelle, Rose, and Natania, form a small but special group, each angel individual and beautiful in its own way.

The Makers
The Karoo Angels story began in 2006 in Vondeling, a remote village in the Karoo semi-desert of South Africa. What started as a small craft project for community upliftment soon grew into something much larger. The project provided training to local artisans, leading to the creation of unique, handcrafted angels from wire, beads, wool, and ostrich feathers. The project expanded to include Rietbron, forming the Karoo Angels brand. These angels have gained international recognition, bringing pride and income to the once-forgotten villages.

The sizes of the Karoo Angels can vary, as each one is handcrafted. This natural variation results from the artisanal process and the use of non-standardised ostrich feathers. Each angel’s individuality adds to its charm and authenticity, making it a truly exceptional piece of art.
