The helmeted guinea fowl, known as the “tarentaal” in South Africa, is a fascinating bird native to Africa and easily recognisable by its distinctive black to grey plumage adorned with white spots, bald face and neck, blue skin, red wattles, and unique bony casque (helmet). These birds spend most of their time on the ground, scratching for food and taking dust baths, and are known for their loud, varied calls. Although they can fly short distances, guinea fowls prefer to walk, covering up to 10 km a day in search of food.
