Part of our Scooby Rainbow Collection, these handwoven telephone wire bowls showcase a vibrant blend of traditional Zulu craftsmanship and contemporary African design. Featuring rich swirls of rainbow colours, each bowl is a unique piece of functional art.

Unlike traditional grass basket-weaving, which starts from the bottom up, these decorative wire bowls are woven from the top down. The process begins with a thick galvanised steel rim, with each wire pulled taut against a form to create the bowl’s shape.

While recycled wire is not used due to its lower quality, weavers use annealed steel core wire that mimics the look of multi-coloured telephone wire, all manufactured in South Africa. This wire is custom-made in vibrant colours using lead-free materials and some recycled content, ensuring both quality and sustainability.

In South Africa, telephone wire is commonly referred to as “Scooby wire”, a playful name that reflects the colourful nature of the material and inspires the name of this joyful collection.

Rootz Creationz, located in the Valley of a Thousand Hills near Durban, South Africa, was started in 1995 by Carey Moran with the goal of creating income opportunities and meaningful jobs for women from disadvantaged backgrounds. In 2024, they celebrate 29 years of designing and producing African-inspired gifts that combine indigenous handcrafting skills with contemporary designs to produce a range of unique products that reflect the colorful, creative spirit of Africa.
